ChatGPT is OpenAI's AI assistant, and for many people it is the first place they ask for a recommendation. It answers from two places: what it learned in training, and live web search when a question calls for it. Questions about products, places, and companies often send it to the web.
Centium tracks ChatGPT on every plan, alongside six other models. What follows are trends from our tracking rather than rules, and we will update this page as they shift.
How ChatGPT answers
When ChatGPT searches, it turns the question into searches of its own, the same query fan-out we measure across every model, and cites the pages it used. What it already knows still shapes the answer. A brand that is well established in its training data starts with an advantage that a newer brand has to earn through search.
That is why both halves matter: whether you are in the data models train on, and whether you are in what they find when they search.
What we're seeing
Wikipedia is its most-cited website. Across the brands we track, Wikipedia shows up in about one in ten ChatGPT answers, more than any other site. No other model leans on it as much.
Expert reviews and large retailers carry weight. Beyond Wikipedia, the sources ChatGPT credits tend to be specialist review sites, category publications, and major retailers.
Forums and social rarely show up. Reddit, YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram almost never appear in what ChatGPT credits, while Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode cite them heavily.
It credits pages more than people. In our research on who AI reads, ChatGPT landed on a named author less often than any other model.
How to show up in ChatGPT
The fundamentals are the same as for any model. With ChatGPT, reference sources and expert coverage do more of the work.
- Get your facts right on Wikipedia. If your brand, a product line, or an accolade already has a place on Wikipedia, make sure it is accurate and properly cited. Our free Wikipedia citation generator formats references the way editors expect.
- Earn a place in expert reviews. Specialist reviewers and category publications are what ChatGPT cites after Wikipedia. A spot in a well-regarded roundup does more than another page of your own copy.
- Let OpenAI's crawlers in. OAI-SearchBot indexes pages for ChatGPT's search, and GPTBot collects content for training. Check your robots.txt with our free AI crawler checker.
- Be in the data it trained on. Brands that were on the web before a model's training cutoff start with an edge. See whether your site is in Common Crawl, the open archive most models learn from.
- Share your product data. If you sell products, OpenAI's merchant program lets you submit product feeds for how your products appear in ChatGPT.
Tracking your AI visibility in ChatGPT
ChatGPT is one of seven models Centium runs on every plan. Each report shows how often ChatGPT names your brand, which competitors it names instead, where you land in its answers, and which sources it credits, next to the same numbers for every other model. Plans start at $99 a month.
