AI Visibility for Perplexity: How to Show Up

AI visibility and AEO for Perplexity. What we're seeing in how the AI answer engine finds and recommends brands, and how to show up in its answers.

Updated

Perplexity is an AI answer engine: every answer starts with a web search and comes back with its sources listed. Of the models we track, it is one of the most open about where an answer came from, and one of the heaviest citers.

Centium tracks Perplexity on every plan, alongside six other models. What follows are trends from our tracking rather than rules, and we will update this page as they shift.

How Perplexity answers

Perplexity searches the web for every question and builds its answer from the pages it finds, citing them inline. Across the brands we track, it credits more sites than almost any other model, so the pages around you, not only your own, shape how it describes you.

What we're seeing

Community and social lead its sources. Reddit shows up in more than one in five Perplexity answers across the brands we track, and YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram all appear often. Only Google AI Mode leans on social platforms as much.

It favors recent content. Perplexity tends to reach for the newest relevant article it can find, and a single fresh piece can end up cited across many different questions.

Review platforms matter for places. For travel, hospitality, and local brands, TripAdvisor is among the sites Perplexity cites most.

How to show up in Perplexity

The fundamentals are the same as for any model. With Perplexity, freshness and the conversation around you do more of the work.

  1. Publish on a steady cadence. Perplexity favors recent pages, so a regular stream of useful content keeps you in what it finds. See which sources AI cites in your category and how recent they are.
  2. Be part of the conversation on Reddit. Real discussion of your brand in the communities where your customers talk is one of Perplexity's main sources. Encourage it, and never fake it.
  3. Keep your social profiles public and current. Facebook and Instagram pages show up in its sources, so public posts that say plainly what you offer can be cited.
  4. Look after your reviews. For places and experiences, review platforms like TripAdvisor are among the sites it cites most.
  5. Let PerplexityBot in. It indexes pages for Perplexity's answers. Check your robots.txt with our free AI crawler checker.

From live web search on every answer. In our tracking, the sites it cites most are Reddit and YouTube, followed by Facebook, specialist review sites, TripAdvisor, and Instagram.

Not the way you rank on Google. Ask Perplexity the same question twice and the list can change, so no single answer is a ranking. What you can measure is how often it names you across many prompts, which brands it names instead, and where you tend to land in its answers.

Centium measures your AI visibility in Perplexity for you. Every plan runs 120 category prompts through all seven models, Perplexity included, then reports how often Perplexity names your brand, which competitors it names instead, where you land in the answer, and which sources it credits. Not if you want to show up in Perplexity. PerplexityBot indexes pages for its answers, so blocking it keeps your pages out of what it can cite. Perplexity-User fetches pages when a person asks for them. Check which ones your site allows with our free AI crawler checker.

Answer Engine Optimization, also called Generative Engine Optimization or GEO, is the work of getting Perplexity to name your brand when someone asks about your category rather than about you. For Perplexity, that leans on fresh content and the community and social conversation around you.
